Farewell "Secret"

Me, looking hot (both figuratively and literally, of course).

I know, you've seen plenty of shots of this, but I just couldn't help taking ONE more...

Below, I'm headed out to do my laundry. I had to lug that b**** of a bag all the way to town...you can see why one might wear a pair of socks a day or two (or more) too long.

Carnival; St. Thomas style

I tell ya, this weren't no New England parade....for starters, it was AT LEAST nine hours long!

Visit from the big "D"

Denny boy, who came to the island the last part of my stay, proved too be a bit too tall for the ol' "Secret." Here he is sticking his head out the hatch for primo teeth brushing.

Lazy Caribbean daze...

The night before we flew home we stayed at a very swank hotel by the sea. Quiet a send off.

The faces of St. J's

Herman, a local jeweler, carved figures out of wood.
Eric, a total sweetheart from Dominica, did carpentry on the same property as me.

Another co-worker, Alfred or "Whatt."

My "peeps" at a local watering hole known as Joe's Diner. Tyron, Legal, Preston, me, Sted and Sarah. (Note, I'm the whitey in the middle).
This is Sarah, she usually wore a fresh flower in her hair everyday.

Terri, ran the St. John Community Crisis Center for battered women and families. I volunteered at the thrift store there.

Best deals on the island, for sure.

Kim, she ran "Joe's."

This is my co-worker/friend Frances (but his friends called him Legal). Here he is cooking on the boat. Probably something "fishy."

Oops

I'm a total ass and dropped my camera in the sea. Stay tuned for later posts, as I wait to replace it. Piss.

The workplace

Island livin'

How ya like them apples? Yep, that's a big ol' jug of "Motts" for $7.49 and NO, I didn't buy it.

View from a hill into town.

"I was here." It's called Cinnamon Bay and that white stuff ain't snow.

This is the "V berth" or bed to the rest of us.

After a rain shower.

Bee-ah

This beer, I am proud to say is brewed in a lovely little city "up north" called...Portland, MAINE!!! The St. John's Brewers works with Shipyard Brewing Co. to get it down here. When I first tried it, I accidentally ordered the mango version. Which of course, as all fruity beers are, was offensive and gross. So, unfortunately, I had to have another round to give the ol' "Summer ale" a try. It was yummy.

Below is the island's only Public Library. Which is currently undergoing renovations so I couldn't go inside. But isn't it lovely?

Colors of the Carib

Apartment building, I think.

A house.

ME!!! I know it doesn't look like it, but my pastey white self DOES have some color.

"Frontyard."

"Backyard."

Boat and such

Best deal on the island.

Me cabin...aaarrrgggh. Note the long green/blue/white design tapestry in the back left leads to the "head" and "berth".

The "sails"...sort of.

My two options for transportation. I usually opt for the kayak. Even tho it seemingly ALWAYS gets my butt wet, it's less embarrassing than trying to row to shore.

and there she is, "Secret".

and...folks, I'm sorry to say but finding place to upload photos, that doesn't cost a fortune and/or isn't SUPER annoyingly slow, is not so easy. So, I'll probably just be posting once a week or so. So, to my dear devoted fans...I'm sorry.

Walkin'

en route to town...

This is across from Vie's house, the women who owns the campground. It's her families plot, when you could still bury on your property.

One thing that's taken me awile to get used to, not that I have yet, is water conservation.

These little sh*ts are ALL over the campground. And this is a baby. They, like the sand crabs, seem drawn to the outhouse. A little unsettling when you're "doin' your business."

I don't want this photo on here, but it won't let me erase it...so, this band was called "The Ish."

This is my first night "on the town." The women in the photo is Nina, a retired commercial fisherman from Alaska. Now she constructs potato cannons and paints landscapes. Hmmm...
A common St. John's saying..."We're all here, 'cuz we're not all there." Get it?

New home!

Just a quick note to let y'all know, I found housing!!! It's a 36 foot sloop (I think) sailboat...w/ no sails. She's super sweet, name's "Secret." Complete w/ dingy, kayak, snorkel gear and a working head! Yea! I'll post photos soon!

My neighbors..."hermi-tabs" A.k.a sand crabs. I have come to find out they love lettuce and the area around the "out house." Gross.

But they sure are pretty.

Denny, this one's for you...a Heineken chandelier. In a Caribbean/ Irish pub of all places.
